Makena is a senior at the George Washington University majoring in Journalism and Mass Communications and double minoring in Political Science and American Studies. During her time at GW, she worked as a reporter and editor for GW’s independent student newspaper The Hatchet for two years. She also interned for the Borgen Project, a national campaign that works to make poverty a focus of U.S. foreign policy, writing research articles and advocating to Congress to support bills that combat poverty. Outside the classroom, Makena has spent every summer in rural Naro Moru, Kenya volunteering in the local schools and working with local community members on their farms learning how they can become more sustainable and efficient. She spent a summer in Alaska on a National Outdoor Leadership School backpacking and kayaking expedition in addition to learning about the environment and what needs to be done to sustain it. Makena is a 200-hour certified yoga instructor and enjoys any activity outside, whether that be hiking outside the DMV area or kayaking on the Potomac.
