ZETA Welcomes EPA Actions To Strengthen Vehicle Emission Standards

April 12, 2023

Today, the Zero Emission Transportation Association (ZETA) welcomed the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new rules that will chart a path to a zero-emission future for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles. The proposed rules set the strongest U.S. performance-based emission standards to date as the Biden-Harris Administration continues to enact policies that will grow the domestic electric vehicle (EV) industry and create good paying, American jobs across the EV supply chain. Transportation remains the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., and tailpipe pollution from heavy-duty vehicles disproportionately burdens historically underserved communities. These rules will create the regulatory certainty needed to further electrify and decarbonize the sector.

In response to today’s announcement, Albert Gore, Executive Director of ZETA, released the following statement:

“We applaud the administration’s leadership in accelerating transportation decarbonization through the EPA’s new vehicle emission standards. This goal is eminently achievable and represents a leap forward not only for the auto industry, but for the millions of workers across the EV supply chain producing critical minerals, manufacturing and recycling batteries, constructing a nationwide charging network, and building out the grid to support it. These critical pollution reduction standards are based on the demonstrated success of EV technology and will be supported by the transformational charging infrastructure and supply chain investments included in the industrial policies put in place over the last two years. Most importantly, they will provide the catalyst to accelerate the nation toward a near term goal of 100% zero emission vehicle sales, create millions of advanced manufacturing jobs across the country, and protect the public health and welfare of our communities. With this proposed rule, the administration is delivering on its goal of a clean transportation future that benefits all Americans, and we are excited to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
